About
Saara Mahbouba (b.San Jose, CA) is a visual artist, artistic researcher, and writer currently based in Helsinki.
Her research interests are primarily in the intersection of identity and labor. She works with a mix of critical theory and pop culture, using the language, strategies, and subject matter of popular media to make her research interests more widely accessible. Her work also often draws on her own experiences, exploring the complexity of embodying an identity that is neither fully within nor outside of categories of hegemony and otherness. Her mediums range from text based work, to various forms of visual and media art.
Saara’s recent projects include an artist’s book exploring performativity published by quince ediciones and supported by Frame, visual art exhibition on romance at Outo Olo gallery supported by TAIKE, and a year long research project on intergenerational memory across distances supported by Kone, with exhibitions at MAA-Tila and Titanik galleries. Saara also works extensively with public programming and organizing, both independently and as a part of arts and community organizations.
Saara holds a B.A. from NYU and an M.A. in Visual Culture, Curating, and Contemporary Art from Aalto University.
